LoveNZ Bins on Wellington Waterfront

The Wellington Waterfront is sporting thirty new rubbish bins in time for Rugby World Cup 2011, with support from the Glass Packaging Forum and carrying the Love NZ branding. Love NZ is a joint public and private sector initiative set up to encourage locals and visitors alike to help the environment as they dispose  of their rubbish when out and about.

The new bins have bright yellow tops that clearly identify them as the place to put plastic, glass and cans.  Just like recyclable rubbish collected at the kerbside, now drink bottles and other items discarded in public places can be easily sorted for reuse.  More of the earth’s finite resources are given an extended life, and less waste is transported to clog council landfills.

“We are delighted with our new bins,” says Wellington Waterfront Property Manager Allan Brown.  “The waterfront attracts thousands of visitors every week, and that means we collect a lot of rubbish that can be reused.”  Mr Brown urges everyone on the waterfront to follow the Love NZ signage and use the bins accordingly.

The bins were made in Lower Hutt by Metal Art Ltd, and are part of their Metallion range of street furniture.  “We think it’s great that these partnerships exist to drive such win-win solutions in the community,” says General Manager Carl Longstaff.  In many other countries, recycling stations have long given people a selection for where to put their rubbish when out in public places.  “Now the facility exists in New Zealand, it’s great to be a part of it,” says Mr Longstaff. Metal Art is heavily involved in the reuse of recycled plastic as well, being the New Zealand distributor for Replas street furniture.

In May Environment Minister Nick Smith launched the Love NZ recycling initiative in Wellington to coincide with RWC 2011. Throughout Wellington an additional 50 permanent public recycling bins are being installed at high profile sites, including temporary bin hire during the tournament for the Wellington Stadium and fanzones. This is part of a nationwide programme of 340 permanent bins and 1700 temporary bins in 25 centres around New Zealand.

The waterfront project was completed with assistance from the Government’s Waste Minimisation Fund.
