Daly Street Community Park
Led by Hutt City Council, the Daly Street initiative reimagines a previously empty city block as a temporary, multifunctional space designed to bring people together. Created in response to community feedback and guided by a vision of connection and creativity, the space offers something for everyone: places to sit and unwind, areas to play and explore, and even opportunities to grow and share kai.
Our team at Metal Art was brought on to help bring this vision to life with bespoke street furniture and community infrastructure. Drawing on our expertise, we manufactured a suite of elements including colourful seating, large planter boxes, bicycle stands, and a bold purple basketball hoop that quickly became a focal point of the space.
One of the standout features of our contribution is the set of wheelchair-accessible community planters. These raised planters allow people of all abilities to engage in urban gardening and connect with others, supporting the project's emphasis on inclusivity and wellbeing.
All furniture was made from a mix of timber and metal-ensuring durability and ease of maintenance while aligning with the Council's goal of low-waste, cost-effective design. Many of the elements are modular and reusable, allowing them to be relocated or repurposed as the city's long-term redevelopment plans progress. This aligns perfectly with our philosophy at Metal Art: building long-lasting, adaptable solutions that serve both people and planet.
Beyond the physical pieces, we valued being part of a wider collaboration that reflects what's possible when local government, designers, and community-minded businesses work together. Te Tōpūnga Hapori i Daly Street is more than just a park-it's a demonstration of how thoughtful design and inclusive planning can transform an overlooked space into a vibrant hub for all.
